Chipmakers are clear winners in the era of the pandemic, and the semiconductor space will remain strong in 2022.
Analysts at Euler Hermes said: "The current semiconductor cycle has been in full swing since the industry's recovery from the worst recession of 2019."
Analysts predict that semiconductor sales are expected to grow another 9% and surpass $600 billion for the first time in 2022. This comes on the back of a 26% increase to $553 billion in 2021, they added.
A months-long semiconductor shortage during the pandemic has affected a wide range of industries from cars to game consoles, as chipmakers struggle to keep up with unprecedented demand as global economic activity rebounds from the Covid crisis .
While major chipmakers such as TSMC have announced plans to increase capacity, it often takes years for these facilities to become operational. TSMC's Taiwan-listed shares have surged more than 80% in about two years.
Three factors have driven sales growth so far. they are:
1. Demand: Demand for consumer electronics such as PCs and smartphones is exceptionally strong;
2. Price: tight supply and demand lead to price increases;
3. Improved product mix: The semiconductor product mix has been further improved due to the introduction of higher-priced next-generation chips.
Looking ahead to the new year, analysts said the three market drivers are expected to moderate as demand growth normalizes and new capacity comes online faster.
In addition, analysts have identified four major risks facing the semiconductor industry:
1. After strong growth in 2020 and 2021, hardware sales (products such as computers and TVs) were hit harder than expected by demand normalization;
2. With supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic, semiconductor demand is hit by any period of prolonged freeze in manufacturing activity;
3. The U.S. and China are “stagnating” in the fight for technological supremacy, and restrictions on Chinese companies’ access to key U.S. semiconductor manufacturing technology and equipment remain;
4. The "increasing frequency of unusually adverse weather events" is proving to be a major challenge for the semiconductor industry, which relies on optimal capacity utilization for profitability.
